County falls to Jackson Prep

JACKSON- Generally, when a player for Yazoo County’s girls basketball squad scores 22 points, it is safe to assume those points came from one of the top players in the state, senior Ashanti Spencer.

However, in a 68-49 loss to Jackson Prep at the Jackson Prep Holiday Classic, it was another Spencer that gave the Lady Patriots trouble. Ashanti Spencer scored 22 points in the loss to Jackson Prep last week.

While Spencer stole the spotlight, the game wasn’t anything spectacular for the Lady Panthers. After gaining a 16-10 lead over Jackson Prep in the first quarter, Yazoo County doomed itself in the second quarter with just eight points while the Lady Patriots totaled 21 points, en route to
the 19-point loss.

Haralson leads County to win

JACKSON – The Lady Panthers of Yazoo County got back to an even .500 overall record Wednesday afternoon with a 45-40 victory against McLaurin at the Jackson Prep Holiday Classic.

While the final score is favorable to the Lady Panthers, the game didn’t start in their favor. McLaurin opened the game with 15 points in the first quarter and 12 in the second to take a 27-21 lead into halftime.

In the third quarter, however, things began to change. The Lady Panthers came out of halftime on fire, scoring 15 points, all the while holding McLaurin to just five, taking the lead 36-32.

Lady Panthers hold off rally

On a day of mourning for the entire Yazoo County High School community, the Panthers and Lady Panthers honored the loss of fellow student David Edwards with a pair of wins Monday night on their home court.

The Lady Panthers and Panthers both had to hold off late rallies by Cleveland to prevail with the girls winning 54-47 and the boys 55-52.

“I thought we played well until the end. We did everything right until the end and then our youth showed up,” Yazoo County head coach Patrick Nutter said. “They were scared of the ball. They wanted to throw it to the senior and let her do everything.. You’re up 17 late in the game, you’re
forcing them to come out and play you and we’re making all the mistakes.”

Thanks to a 19-point second quarter, the Lady Panthers led Cleveland 24-15 at halftime. Yazoo County expanded its lead to 15 points by the end of the third quarter, outscoring the Lady Wildcats 13-7. However, in the fourth quarter, things got interesting.

The Lady Panthers had turned the ball over too many times for Nutter’s liking in the first three quarters and it continued into the fourth quarter.

Lady Panthers are perfect, 11-0

GLUCKSTADT – For Yazoo County’s junior high girls basketball team, Monday night’s 34-15 victory over Germantown highlighted a first for the program, at least in recent memory; an undefeated season.

“These are a special group of girls,” first year head coach Grant Andrews said whose team finished 11-0 as the Big Black regular season champions. “They play hard, they work hard. You never hear any negative attitude from them.”
